Health and Dental Information (2010/2011)

Full-time graduate students are automatically members of the UMSU Health and Dental plan, and are assessed the fee on their tuition fee statements in the fall term or upon registration into their graduate program. Part-time graduate students are not automatically assessed the fees, however they are eligible to opt-in to the plan directly through the UMSU Health & Dental office. Students already covered by a health and/or dental plan through a private plan (i.e. employer, spouse or parent) can opt-out of the plan. Students may also coordinate existing benefits with the UMSU plan and/or enroll a spouse or dependant(s) for an additional fee.

Member Information/Green Shield Customer Service

Coverage period for the 2010/2011 Health & Dental Plan will be from September 1, 2010– August 31, 2011. Forms can be accessed through a link from the www.umsu.ca website or picked up at the Health & Dental Office at 110 University Centre.

International Students

The Manitoba International Student Health Insurance Plan (MISHIP) is comparable to the provincial basic health coverage that Manitobans receive and it is a requirement that all students have basic health coverage to attend the University of Manitoba.  Regardless of your ability to pay your full tuition fees up front all international students should have MISHIP coverage.  If you are international and a registered graduate student having difficulty in obtaining your coverage please come talk to a member of the GSA Executive.

The differences between MISHIP & Green Shield Health and Dental.

Opting-Out (Waiving Entitlement to Participation)

Graduate Students who are automatically assessed the fees on their tuition but are already covered by a health and/or dental plan through a private plan (i.e. employer, spouse, parents) are able to opt-out of the plan though an online opt-out process.

Online Opt-Out Forms are available at www.umsu.ca. The opt-out deadline for the Fall Term is September 22, 2010. (The online opt-out will be up and running on July 6, 2010.)

Adding Family Coverage

Students eligible for the plan are also eligible to add Family Coverage. You must make written application at the Health Plan office in order for your spouse and/or dependent(s) to be covered and you must pay the additional dependent coverage fee, to the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. Deadline to add Family coverage is October 15, 2010 and the fee is $384.05 for Health & Dental Coverage. ($109.95 Health and $274.10 Dental) You can add family coverage starting August 15, 2010.

IMPORTANT - Late Registration (Graduate Students)

UMSU understands the fact that a number of Graduate Students will not be registered prior to the September 22nd deadline. We have worked to create a process where if a grad student is a late registrant and is assessed the Health & Dental fees on their tuition, the University of Manitoba Registrar’s Office will notify the UMSU Health & Dental office. They will also notify the student of their option to opt-out of the plan if they have alternate Health & Dental Coverage. The student will have 10 business days from their date of registration to file an opt-out with the UMSU Health & Dental Office. If the student wishes to be a part of the plan and does not opt-out they will then be activated in the Green Shield system are required to pay the Health & Dental Fee.
