Open Access Week

The University of Manitoba Libraries invites you to an Open Access Event on Monday, October 24th at 9:00 a.m. in Theatre B, Basic Sciences Building, Bannatyne Campus. Please register for this October 24th event. Joanne Keselman , Vice President Academic and Provost, will introduce the morning of presentations. Speakers will include: Robert Schatz, Biomed Central Karen Spiegelman, Public Library of Science UM of authors who have published with these open access publishers Libraries’ staff will also give a brief presentation on OJS, the Public Knowledge Project software for setting up and running an open access journal. Please join us – morning coffee and refreshments will be provided and a draw for two door prizes will be held for registered participants. The event is open (of course) to all. October 24-30 is International Open Access Week, an opportunity for universities to promote and take stock of open access as a critical part of research and innovation. The basic principle behind open access is to facilitate public access to research, particularly research funded by tax-payers. This can be achieved by publishing in an open access journal or by posting a copy of the research in an institutional or discipline-related repository.

Research Integrity Matters

A workshop for all faculty and graduate student researchers. presented by Professor Nicholas H. Steneck (Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan). Wednesday, October 26, 2011 2:30 to 4:30 pm Senate Chambers, E3-262 Engineering and Information Technology Complex Tuesday, October 25, 2011 1:30 to 3:30 pm Fredric Gaspard Theatre, Basic Medical Sciences Building, Bannatyne Campus This workshop will focus on researchers’ primary responsibilities, summarize what is known about research integrity shortfalls globally and in a wide range of research areas, and engage in a discussion of what can be done to foster high standards for integrity in research, beginning at the level of the individual researcher and research team. It will be organized around the new Tri- Council Policy on the Responsible Conduct of Research (to be released in the fall of 2011), the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity and other policies relevant to research in Canada. The proposals for future action will be discussed based in part on Professor Steneck’s work as a consultant to the US Office of Research Integrity and founder and co-organizer of the World Conferences on Research Integrity.
